Former Conservative MP Rory Stewart has launched a scathing critique of Theresa May's handling of former US President Donald Trump, branding it a 'diplomatic disaster' that damaged UK-US relations.
In a candid interview, Stewart claimed May's government missed a crucial opportunity to build a stronger relationship with the Trump administration during a pivotal moment in British politics.
'A Failure of Statecraft'
Stewart, who served as a minister under May, argued that her approach to Trump was overly deferential and lacked strategic vision. 'We had a chance to influence the most powerful nation on earth during Brexit negotiations, and we squandered it,' he stated.
The Infamous Hand-Holding Incident
The former MP particularly highlighted the much-criticised moment when May held Trump's hand during his 2018 UK visit. 'That image became symbolic of our weakness,' Stewart remarked. 'Instead of asserting British interests, we projected subservience.'
Missed Opportunities During Brexit
Stewart suggested that May's government could have leveraged Trump's vocal support for Brexit to secure better trade terms, but failed to capitalise on the opportunity. 'There was no coherent strategy,' he claimed. 'We reacted rather than led.'
The criticism comes as Stewart promotes his new book examining contemporary political leadership, which includes sharp analysis of both May and Trump's premierships.
