Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called for the next United Nations secretary general to be a woman from Latin America, saying it is time for the organisation to break with its tradition of male leadership.
Call for change at UN
Speaking during his address to the UN general assembly, Sánchez said: 'And what I'm advocating for this leadership is very clear. Nine men have served as secretary general of this organisation in its 80 years of existence. Now it's time for a woman to serve, a Latin American woman.'
Selection timeline
The selection of the next UN chief is expected later this year, with the term of the current secretary general, António Guterres, ending on 31 December.
