In a rare bipartisan moment, US lawmakers Bernie Sanders and Marjorie Taylor Greene have both condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with the independent senator and far-right Republican urging President Trump to halt the famine. Their statements on Saturday followed a UN-backed report warning of imminent starvation in parts of the enclave.
Sanders posted on X that Trump has the power to end the starvation but is doing nothing, adding: “Enough is enough. No more American taxpayer dollars to Netanyahu’s war machine.” The Vermont senator has long pushed resolutions to ban US weapons sales to Israel.
Greene, known for her far-right views, broke with most of her party to describe the crisis as a genocide. In a social media post, she argued that while Israel’s war against Hamas is justified, the suffering of innocent civilians is not. She questioned how Americans could have compassion for Israeli victims but remain silent on the “masses of innocent people and children in Gaza.”
The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report described the famine as “man-made” and called for an immediate, at-scale response. Israel’s COGAT agency rejected the findings, accusing the report of relying on biased data from Hamas.
Far-right influencer Laura Loomer quickly responded to Greene, accusing her of advocating for Palestinian resettlement in the US and calling Palestinian children a “national security threat.” US Ambassador Mike Huckabee also dismissed the famine report, claiming Hamas steals food while UN supplies rot.
The unusual alignment between Sanders and Greene highlights growing discontent in Congress over US involvement in the Gaza war, even as most lawmakers remain silent on the issue.
