Lisa Niemi Maintains Spiritual Connection with Late Husband Patrick Swayze
Lisa Niemi, the widow of iconic actor Patrick Swayze, has revealed that she maintains a daily spiritual connection with her late husband, engaging in conversations with his ghost to combat loneliness. In a candid interview with Us Weekly, Niemi shared intimate details about her ongoing relationship with Swayze's memory nearly seventeen years after his tragic death from pancreatic cancer.
Daily Conversations and Spiritual Presence
"I still feel him with me every day, and hear what he would say to me about certain things. It's great," Niemi confessed. "I talk to him, I feel him. I hear his voice in my head. He gives me advice, and I am absolutely certain that he is there whenever I need him." She surrounds herself with photographs of Swayze throughout her home, keeping his visual presence alive alongside the spiritual one.
The "Instant Nightmare" of Cancer Diagnosis
Niemi vividly recalled the devastating moment in January 2008 when Swayze received his Stage IV pancreatic cancer diagnosis. "Nothing prepares you," she said emotionally. "Actually, when Patrick first found out, when the doctor left the room, he turned to me and said, 'I'm a dead man.'" Swayze understood the grim prognosis from friends' experiences, recognizing it as "almost a death sentence."
Despite pledging to fight with everything they had, Niemi acknowledged the overwhelming odds. "It was being thrown into an instant nightmare. We all knew how this would, in all likelihood, end, but we held out hope that he would be the one that would make it through," she remembered.
Navigating Grief and Loneliness
Following Swayze's death in September 2009 after their thirty-four-year marriage, Niemi experienced profound isolation. "Patrick and I were married for 34 years and I pretty much spent my entire adult life with him," she explained. "To be without that meaningful relationship was very hard and extremely lonely. I was much lonelier than I would have admitted at that time."
Niemi now recognizes how she neglected her own wellbeing during Swayze's illness. "I used to go to TJ Maxx if I was able to take a break," she shared. "I'd go two hours searching for the perfect T-shirt. I pay my 12 bucks, and I'm out of there. That was my break, and it worked, but I didn't do enough of it, and I should have done a lot more and gotten a lot more support."
Finding Love Again While Honoring the Past
In 2014, Niemi found love again with jeweler Albert DePrisco, but maintains her connection to Swayze. She had a frank conversation with DePrisco about her enduring love for her late husband. "I asked Albert, 'Does it bother you that I still love Patrick?' And he said, 'I know you do. But I'm here to love you now.' And he knows that I can love Patrick, and I can love him," she revealed.
Niemi believes Swayze would approve of her happiness. "I get the sense that Patrick would have wanted me to be happy and not be alone. I think he would have approved of Albert. Albert's a good man." The couple now lives on a horse ranch in Florida, where Niemi continues to feel Swayze's presence.
Advocacy and Keeping His Memory Alive
Beyond personal remembrance, Niemi channels her experience into advocacy work with organizations like the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. She participates in their annual Purple Stride event on May 25th, transforming her grief into meaningful action. "Oh, yeah, I do. Because he knows I still care, and how much I care," she said about maintaining her connection through this work.
Niemi's journey illustrates the complex navigation of loss, love, and spiritual connection. She frequently thinks, "If only he were here. I could share this with him," while building a new life that honors both her past with Swayze and her present with DePrisco.
