King hails Ukraine-UK bond on independence day

King Charles has sent his “sincere and special wishes” to Ukraine on the 35th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union, praising the “steadfast determination” of Ukrainians defending their homeland.

The monarch, holidaying at Balmoral ahead of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to the UK, said he was “greatly encouraged by the enduring friendship” between the two nations.

King’s message to Ukraine

In his message, the King said: “As we reflect upon Ukraine’s proud history, rich culture and indomitable national spirit, we are reminded of the extraordinary fortitude Ukrainians have shown in defending their homeland and preserving the identity and values which define your nation.”

He added: “Such steadfast determination continues to command profound admiration throughout the United Kingdom and around the world.”

“My wife and I send our sincere and special wishes to you and to all Ukrainians for the possibility of peace, security and prosperity in the year ahead,” the King said.

Zelensky’s response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the King for his “deeply moving and exceptionally meaningful” message, praising his emphasis on Ukraine’s history and unyielding national spirit, and spoke of the “special bond” between the two countries.

Mr Zelensky, who has forged a strong bond with the King at their numerous audiences, added of the monarch, who is still being treated for cancer: “I wish His Majesty good health and continued success, as well as peace and prosperity for the United Kingdom and its people.”

Prime Minister’s visit to Kyiv

On Monday, Andy Burnham made his first trip to Kyiv as Prime Minister to underline support for the country amid the war with Russia, announcing that the UK would provide Ukraine with blueprints for long-range Scalp missiles.
