King Charles to Discuss Iran and NATO with Trump During US Visit
King Charles to Talk Iran and NATO with Trump

King Charles is set to engage in one of the most significant diplomatic challenges of his reign as UK-US relations face strain. President Donald Trump has revealed plans to discuss the Iran war and NATO tensions during the monarch's upcoming state visit.

High-Stakes Visit

The four-day visit, marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, comes amid deteriorating ties between the two nations. Trump also intends to raise the UK digital services tax, which he has threatened to counter with tariffs unless Prime Minister Keir Starmer abandons the levy targeting major tech firms.

"I'm going to talk about everything," Trump stated in a phone interview with Reuters. "He's a friend of mine, and he's a great guy."

Royal Sources Acknowledge Risks

Royal sources have described the visit as "high risk, high stakes, and high opportunity" given the strained relations since the Iran war, including repeated criticism of Starmer over Britain's refusal to join military action. Before the visit, Trump posted on social media telling allies to "get your own oil," adding that the US "won't be there to help you anymore." He also dismissed British warships as "toys" in a jibe at NATO allies.

Royal author Andrew Lownie noted this is "the biggest crisis in Anglo-American relations for a century," but suggested that if anyone can influence Trump, it is the King. Royal historian Ed Owens agreed the visit occurs amid "very unusual" political tensions and will be a "huge global event."

Balancing Act

Royal sources described the visit as a "delicate balancing act" but emphasized the broader picture of long-term US-UK friendship. "Yes, we face current challenges, but the visit will also seek to celebrate our nations' historic ties and create the conditions for that partnership to continue," they told the BBC.

During the visit, the King will travel to Virginia, New York, and Washington DC, where he will meet privately with Trump and deliver a joint address to Congress. He will also participate in a 9/11 memorial wreath-laying ceremony with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Trump expressed confidence in Charles's ability to help repair relations: "I know him well... He's a brave man, and he's a great man. They would absolutely be a positive."
