Controversial rapper and producer Kanye West, now known as Ye, has faced another significant setback to his European tour, with Swiss football club FC Basel cancelling a planned performance at their stadium. The club stated the decision was made because the show did not align with their organisational values.
FC Basel's Statement on the Cancellation
Representatives for FC Basel confirmed to Reuters that they had received an enquiry about hosting Kanye West at St Jakob-Park in June but decided against proceeding after a thorough review. A spokesperson explained, "FCB received an enquiry and considered it. However, after thorough review, we have decided not to proceed with the project, as we cannot, in accordance with our values, provide a platform for the artist in question within this context."
This cancellation adds to a growing list of disrupted shows for West, largely stemming from backlash over his past antisemitic remarks and associated controversies.
Recent Tour Disruptions Across Europe
Earlier this month, West's three-night headline slot at the Wireless Festival in London was blocked after the UK government denied him entry into the country. Additionally, a scheduled performance at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, on 19 June was cancelled due to "formal and legal reasons."
Poland's culture minister, Marta Cienkoska, publicly opposed the Polish show, describing it as "unacceptable." She elaborated on social media platform X, stating, "We are talking about an artist who has publicly made antisemitic views, downplayed crimes and profited from selling swastika T-shirts. These are not 'controversies'. This is a deliberate crossing of boundaries and the normalisation of hatred."
Postponement in France and Future Shows
West also announced the postponement of his planned show at the Orange Velodrome in Marseille, France, on 11 June. He wrote on X, "After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille. I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends. I take full responsibility for what's mine but I don't want to put my fans in the middle of it. My fans are everything to me. Looking forward to the next shows. See you at the top of the globe."
Despite these cancellations, some scheduled performances remain intact. The promoter for West's concert in Madrid assured The Independent, "The Ye Live Madrid show is going ahead as planned. We're confident it will sell out in the coming weeks and deliver an incredible night for Ye fans."
The series of cancellations highlights ongoing challenges for West as he attempts to navigate the consequences of his past statements and actions while maintaining his touring schedule across Europe.
