Israel Declares War on Hamas After Unprecedented Attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared his nation is 'at war' and promised 'mighty vengeance' against Hamas, following a devastating and coordinated large-scale attack launched from the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

The surprise assault, involving hundreds of rockets and armed militants infiltrating by land, sea, and air, represents the most significant escalation in the conflict in decades. Israeli media reports indicate at least 40 casualties and hundreds more wounded, while Hamas claims to have taken numerous Israeli soldiers and civilians hostage.

Unprecedented Infiltration and Hostage Crisis

The attack began in the early morning with a massive barrage of rockets targeting Israeli towns and cities. Simultaneously, Hamas fighters breached the heavily fortified Gaza border fence using explosives and motorised paragliders, attacking military bases and civilian communities.

Disturbing videos circulating on social media appear to show Israeli civilians and soldiers being captured and taken back into Gaza. The Israeli military has confirmed that soldiers and civilians have been abducted, vowing to use 'all its might' to destroy Hamas's capabilities.

Israeli Retaliation and Ground Operations

In response, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have initiated Operation 'Iron Swords', striking multiple Hamas targets within Gaza. 'We will turn all the hiding places of Hamas and other terrorist organisations into rubble,' an IDF spokesperson stated.

Prime Netanyahu, in a televised address, emphasised the gravity of the situation: "We are at war, not an operation or a round of fighting. The enemy will pay an unprecedented price." He further ordered a widespread mobilisation of reserves and instructed civilians in Gaza to leave immediately as operations continue to expand.

The international community is watching with grave concern, urging restraint amid fears of a major ground invasion and a severe humanitarian crisis in the already blockaded Gaza Strip.
