Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for launching four ballistic missiles at the USS Abraham Lincoln, a US aircraft carrier deployed to the Middle East as part of President Donald Trump's pressure campaign on Iran. The attack occurred on Sunday, according to a statement from the IRGC reported by Iranian state media.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is one of two US aircraft carriers recently sent to the region, and the only one positioned relatively close to Iranian shores. The attempted strike is part of Iran's revenge operations following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by the US and Israel.
The US military confirmed it struck an Iranian ship as part of ongoing operations, stating that the vessel is currently sinking at a pier in Chah Bahar, in the Gulf of Oman. The US military also issued a warning for Iranian forces to abandon ship and lay down their weapons.
