India summoned the Maldivian high commissioner on Monday after three deputy ministers made derogatory comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. The officials, who have been suspended, referred to Mr Modi as a 'clown', 'terrorist' and 'puppet of Israel' in response to his tourism promotion post about Lakshadweep.
The Indian foreign ministry stated that the remarks were personal and did not reflect the Maldivian government's views. A spokesperson for President Mohamed Muizzu confirmed the suspension of Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, effective immediately.
The comments sparked outrage in India, with hashtags like #BoycottMaldives trending. Some Indians cancelled holiday plans to the Maldives, and the CEO of EaseMyTrip suspended flight bookings to the archipelago. Bollywood star Akshay Kumar and several cricketers expressed dismay.
Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the 'hateful language', urging that it not damage bilateral ties. Another ex-president, Mohamed Nasheed, called the language 'appalling'. The controversy comes as President Muizzu prepares for a five-day state visit to China, seen as a snub to India.
India and the Maldives have been under strain since Mr Muizzu took office and requested the withdrawal of about 75 Indian troops. India maintains that its personnel operate three maritime surveillance aircraft donated to the Maldives. In December, the Maldivian government terminated a seabed mapping agreement with India.
