Government Under Pressure
The Greek government, traditionally cautious in its Middle East diplomacy, is facing mounting calls to take a firmer stance against Israel's actions. While Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has expressed concern over civilian casualties, his administration has stopped short of joining other European nations in demanding an immediate ceasefire.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Protesters highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where over 30,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since the conflict began. "We cannot stay silent while innocent people are being massacred," said Maria Papadopoulos, a student organiser. "Greece has a moral obligation to act."
Police Presence Heavy
Authorities deployed riot police around key government buildings, though the demonstration remained largely peaceful. Minor scuffles broke out when a small group attempted to march towards the Israeli embassy, but were quickly contained.
The protest comes as international pressure grows on Israel to halt its offensive, with the UN warning of potential famine in Gaza if aid isn't significantly increased.
