Israeli forces have pushed deep into the heart of Gaza City, surrounding the territory's last remaining major hospital as intense urban warfare escalates the humanitarian crisis to catastrophic levels.
Al-Shifa Hospital: Epicentre of the Crisis
The Al-Shifa medical complex, Gaza's largest hospital, has become the focal point of the conflict with Israeli troops now positioned just outside its gates. Medical officials report the facility is completely surrounded, with thousands of patients, medical staff, and displaced civilians trapped inside.
"We are under siege, there is no way in or out," said a doctor speaking from inside the hospital. "The situation is beyond catastrophic - we're operating without electricity, running out of supplies, and hearing tanks firing just outside."
Urban Warfare Intensifies
Israeli military officials confirmed their forces are now operating in the "heart of Gaza City," marking a significant advancement in their ground offensive against Hamas. The military claims Hamas has established command centres in and under hospital buildings, allegations medical staff vehemently deny.
Witnesses describe scenes of chaos as tanks roll through residential neighbourhoods and airstrikes continue to pound buildings throughout the city. The sounds of heavy gunfire and explosions echo through streets now largely emptied of civilians.
Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolds
The situation for civilians remaining in Gaza City grows increasingly desperate:
- Food and clean water supplies have almost completely run out
- Hospitals are operating without power and critical medical supplies
- Communication blackouts are hampering rescue efforts
- Thousands are sheltering in hospitals and UN facilities
International aid organisations warn that the healthcare system in northern Gaza has effectively collapsed. "What we're witnessing is the complete breakdown of medical services in a war zone," said a Red Cross spokesperson.
Diplomatic Efforts Stalled
Despite growing international pressure for a ceasefire, diplomatic efforts remain deadlocked. The United States continues to support Israel's right to self-defence while urging greater protection for civilians.
United Nations officials have described the situation as "a textbook recipe for humanitarian disaster" and are calling for immediate humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to escape the fighting and aid to reach those trapped.
