Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant has admitted he is 'gutted' that his on-screen father Matthew Wolfenden is leaving the ITV soap after 17 years. Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, announced his departure last week, leaving Plant emotional over the loss of his co-star and mentor.
Plant, who plays Jacob Gallagher, credited Wolfenden with teaching him everything he knows about acting. 'I had no previous acting experience, so everything came directly from Matthew,' he told Inside Soap. The pair have developed a close friendship off-screen, with Plant describing Wolfenden as his 'best friend' and 'the most genuine soul you could ever meet'.
Wolfenden confirmed his exit on This Morning, saying he was 'emotional' to leave after nearly two decades. 'It feels like the right time, the door has been left open — they're not killing me off,' he said, hinting at a possible return. He also reflected on meeting his wife, Charley Webb (Debbie Dingle), on the show, calling it 'the most wonderful 18 years'.
Plant speculated on how his character will cope without David, suggesting Jacob will spend more time with his mother Leyla and struggle without a father figure. 'Jacob loves David to pieces... Jacob will struggle without him,' he said.
