Death in Paradise Star Shaquille Ali-Yebuah Reveals Heartbreak Over Brother's Passing

Shaquille Ali-Yebuah, the talented 30-year-old actor who joined the beloved BBC series Death in Paradise last year as officer Sebastian Rose, has spoken candidly about the profound impact of his younger brother's sudden death. Zion Ali-Yebuah passed away in 2023 at just 20 years old, leaving the actor and his family devastated.

In an exclusive interview, Shaquille described how the tragedy led him to take a break from acting, but the role on Death in Paradise has since become a therapeutic outlet during this difficult period. He shared, "My younger brother is no longer with us. He was 20 when he died, and it would have been his 23rd birthday last week. His death left us all devastated, and I took a break from acting."

Finding Solace Through Music and Acting

At the height of his grief, Shaquille, who is also a musician, recorded a song titled Long Live Zi as a tribute to Zion. He released it online, receiving messages from others who found comfort in it during their own losses. "I got a lot of people messaging me saying how it helped them get through the hard times of losing a family relative too. We wanted to do it as a nice tribute celebrating his life," he explained.

When he felt ready to return to work in 2024, Shaquille auditioned for Death in Paradise and landed the part of Sebastian Rose, a quirky cop who solves crimes using social media. He sees this opportunity as fate, stating, "Death in Paradise was one of my first auditions. It was as if it was meant to be and fate I got the part."

The Healing Power of Guadeloupe

Filming on the island of Guadeloupe has provided Shaquille with a serene escape. He praised the location's spiritual energy, beautiful nature, and laid-back atmosphere, contrasting it with the fast pace of life in the UK. "Guadeloupe is such a nice spiritual island. Beautiful nature, you have mangoes and coconuts just laying around in abundance, beautiful sunsets and every beach is picturesque," he said.

Shaquille also reflected on how his brother would have enjoyed the experience, adding, "I used to bring my brother onto sets and to auditions to inspire him. I know 100 per cent he would be proud of me. And I know he would definitely have been with me in Guadeloupe during filming, exploring nature and island living."

A Supportive Cast and Career Highlights

Working on the show, which attracts around eight million viewers, has been a joyful experience for Shaquille. He highlighted the welcoming cast, including Don Gilet, who previously played his father in a 2013 radio production, and Ginny Holder, who helped him adjust to life in Guadeloupe.

Shaquille's career includes notable roles such as:

  • An Imperial mud trooper in a Star Wars film alongside Thandie Newton and Woody Harrelson.
  • A young footballer in a Nike FIFA World Cup YouTube ad featuring Cristiano Ronaldo and Kobe Bryant.
  • Appearances in FBI: International on Paramount+.

He expressed gratitude for these opportunities, noting the surreal feeling of working with childhood idols.

Inspiring Future Generations

Growing up in Brent, London, Shaquille comes from a musical family that has always been supportive. His father is a Grammy award-winning producer, and his grandfather managed reggae stars like Dennis Brown. He hopes his journey inspires others to pursue their dreams, emphasizing that success requires patience and perseverance.

"All I want to do is show people that if you have a dream, you must chase it. Success isn't overnight. It's rare you get in the game and consistently start booking straight away, it takes time and you learn and grow, it's a journey," he advised.

Looking Ahead

Fans will be delighted to hear that Shaquille will return for another series of Death in Paradise. He looks forward to exploring more of his character Sebastian Rose, describing him as a great team player with a fidgety brain that becomes a superpower in solving cases.
