Days Left to Watch 'Greatest Ever' Crime Thriller on Amazon

Film enthusiasts have only a handful of days remaining to catch one of the most celebrated gangster movies ever made, which is set to depart from Amazon Prime Video. The Godfather, released over half a century ago, continues to command a massive and devoted following.

A Cinematic Masterpiece

Starring Marlon Brando in one of his most iconic roles and launching Al Pacino to stardom, the film is widely regarded as the gold standard for crime cinema. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather chronicles the epic saga of the Corleone crime family, serving as the first chapter of a legendary trilogy.

Based on Mario Puzo's novel, the film tells the story of an Italian-American criminal dynasty led by Don Vito Corleone, brought to life by Brando. The narrative follows his youngest son, Michael, portrayed by Pacino, as he evolves from a reluctant outsider into a ruthless Mafia boss. Diane Keaton plays Michael's devoted wife, with whom he struggles to maintain a normal relationship while being drawn into a violent underworld.

Critical and Audience Acclaim

Released in 1972, The Godfather earned widespread acclaim, winning three Oscars for Best Actor (Brando), Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also received seven Golden Globe nominations, winning Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Score, and Best Picture. Today, it stands as the second greatest American film ever made, behind only Citizen Kane.

The film maintains an exceptional 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic described it as “a sweeping, epic tale of family, crime, corruption and the Immigrant experience in America,” while another called it “the most memorable, most influential, most quoted, most beloved, most entertaining American movie ever made.”

Fans have also heaped praise, with one calling it “the Old Testament of cinema: a towering, operatic masterpiece.” Another said, “The single greatest movie of all time. I’ve rewatched it over 20 times and it never gets old.”

The Godfather will leave Amazon Prime Video on 8 May.
