Former 1980s Hollywood Star Emerges at Political Demonstration
A prominent actress from the 1980s and 1990s was observed last Saturday in Palm Desert, California, participating in one of the nationwide No Kings protests. The star, whose career once flourished in Hollywood, shared the screen with major names like Brad Pitt and Christian Slater during her active years.
A Career That Sparkled and Faded
She graced some of the most iconic television shows of the era, including appearances on 21 Jump Street and Melrose Place. However, by the late 1990s, her acting opportunities diminished, leading to her retirement from the entertainment industry in 2002 after a final straight-to-video film.
Now 58 years old, she was recently glimpsed at an anti-Trump demonstration, where she held a sign reading: 'Operation Epic Failure.' This was a pointed critique of the American government's official name for the Iran War, Operation Epic Fury.
Identifying the Mystery Attendee
The actress is none other than Cheryl Pollak, who co-starred with Brad Pitt in his first leading role in the 1988 US-Yugoslav production The Dark Side of the Sun. In that film, Pitt portrayed a character with a severe skin condition requiring complete coverage from sunlight, while Pollak played an actress intrigued by his veiled appearance but disinterested upon seeing his true face.
Her collaboration with Pitt began earlier, on a 1987 episode of the beloved high school sitcom 21 Jump Street, where both served as guest stars. During her recent sighting at the Palm Desert protest, Pollak dressed in a flowing collared shirt and cutoff trousers, maintaining a minimalist look with sunglasses and a baseball cap to shield her complexion from the sun.
Life Beyond the March
While not actively marching with her poster that day, Pollak was seen taking a break at an alfresco table of a local Mexican restaurant, enjoying refreshments. Born in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1967, she launched her Hollywood career at age 19, making her movie debut in the 1987 horror comedy My Best Friend Is a Vampire.
Her filmography includes the 1990 teen drama Pump Up the Volume, led by Christian Slater, and roles alongside Robert Sean Leonard, later known from Dead Poets Society. Pollak also guest-starred on TV series such as Alien Nation, Quantum Leap, Hotel Malibu, and JAG.
Personal and Professional Evolution
She has been married to Richard Murphy since 1999, who directed her in the 1998 comedy Betty, where she played a runaway actress in Palm Springs. The film featured co-stars like Holland Taylor, Ron Perlman, and Udo Kier.
As an actress, her final project was the 2002 direct-to-video thriller Time of Fear, in which she portrayed an FBI agent. Since retiring from acting, she worked as a director, with her last offering being the 2012 animated short Jasper: A Fabulous Fourth.
