BRIT Awards 2026 Ceremony Draws Criticism for Memorial Segment

The BRIT Awards 2026, hosted at Manchester's Co-op Live arena, has ignited significant controversy following its In Memoriam tribute segment. This year's ceremony marked a historic departure, being the first time the prestigious event has been held outside London since its inception in 1977. While the evening featured notable highlights, including Olivia Dean's dominant award wins and several censored incidents, it was the memorial tribute that became the focal point of widespread viewer dissatisfaction.

Tim Burgess Pays Tribute to Stone Roses Legend Mani

The In Memoriam section featured a heartfelt speech by The Charlatans icon Tim Burgess, who paid homage to his close friend and Stone Roses legendary bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield. Mani, a Mancunian music great, passed away peacefully in his sleep last November at age 63 due to complications from respiratory issues related to a chronic lung condition.

Tim Burgess, aged 58, took to the stage with emotional words: "I'm here tonight to pay tribute to a good friend of mine. I know he was loved by so many of you here tonight and many more watching on TV. Mani was a kid from a few miles up the road. He changed music and inspired generations ahead of him. These songs he recorded will be his legacy, along with his unforgettable smile and uncontainable enthusiasm."

He concluded his tribute by saying, "He was truly one of the phenomenal ones, and they are far and few between. So, I just want you to think about Mani for a moment. We can cherish the thought that we got to experience our time and his time together. Let's take a few moments to remember Mani and some of the people who we lost in the music industry, who we've lost in the last year." The audience responded with enthusiastic applause following his poignant remarks.

Viewer Backlash Over 'Rushed' Memorial Montage

Following Burgess's speech, a tribute montage was displayed, honouring numerous music legends who have passed away recently. However, this segment quickly became the subject of intense criticism from viewers watching at home. Many took to social media platform X to express their disappointment, branding the tribute as "rushed," "insincere," and "disrespectful."

One viewer, @SufcLee, commented: "That in memoriam was bit awful. seemed a bit rushed and I assumed it was building to something that never happened #BRITs #Brits2026." Another, @karendiamond1, concurred: "That was the most rushed and insincere award show 'in memorium' segment I've seen."

Gloria Gardner added: "Worst memorial ever to musical artists deceased #Brits2026 may have not bothered. Seemed like a fleeting tribute. Not even a photo of Ozzy, the names flashed by so fast I could not even spot them all. #disrepectful."

Further criticism came from @bookmadmum, who stated: "That was the worst memorial part of the Brits I've ever seen - if you are going to honour those we have lost do it properly and with dignity and don't get anyone to introduce it if they can't string a sentence together #Brits2026."

@FIOatHeart remarked: "What on gods green earth was that memorial ... a couple of clips with a tonn of names popping in and out quick is not a memorial. All them names on there, deserved a million times more of a memorial montage, like they usually have. Do better."

Additional negative feedback included @ZODl4C's comment: "that was terrible, who thought it was a good idea to do the memorial section like that #Brits2026 #brits #BRITsAwards," and @xmaaisieex's observation: "Pretty weak memorial moment from the #BRITs #BRITsAwards."

Historic Venue Change Overshadowed by Controversy

The 2026 BRIT Awards ceremony was notable for its venue change to Manchester's Co-op Live, breaking a long-standing tradition of London-based events. This move was seen as a significant moment for the music industry, aiming to celebrate talent beyond the capital. However, the controversy surrounding the In Memoriam segment has somewhat overshadowed this historic aspect.

Despite the backlash, the evening did feature several positive moments, including musical performances and award presentations. Yet, the widespread criticism of the tribute montage suggests that many viewers felt the segment failed to adequately honour the legacies of departed music icons, with names flashing too quickly across the screen and lacking the dignified presentation typically expected at such events.

The BRIT Awards organisers have not yet issued a public response to the viewer complaints. As the ceremony continues to generate discussion online, it remains to be seen whether future events will adjust their approach to memorial tributes based on this feedback.
