A coroner has ruled that Hefin David, the Welsh Labour Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly, died by suicide. The 47-year-old was found at his home in Nelson, Caerphilly, on August 12 last year, the day before his 48th birthday.
Senior coroner Caroline Saunders recorded a conclusion of suicide, stating that Mr David suffered from reactive depression due to stressors in his personal and working life. The inquest heard that he had consulted his GP in October 2021 and was prescribed antidepressants and counselling, but sought no further support after October 2024 and stopped taking medication in May 2025, leading to a downturn in his mental health.
Mr David was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics' efforts. A post-mortem examination confirmed death by hanging, with no third-party involvement and no influence of drugs or alcohol. The coroner noted that Mr David did not disclose the depth of his depression to family or colleagues, continuing to work hard and make plans for the future.
Mr David had represented Caerphilly since 2016, serving on the Senedd's economy and culture committees. He often spoke about his daughter's autism and learning difficulties. His family described him as a devoted father, son, brother, uncle, and partner, and requested privacy to grieve.
