Vandals have repeatedly damaged a war memorial in Bilsthorpe, Staffordshire, which features wooden soldiers and poppies. The display, built and maintained by Glenys and Arthur Pinnock over the past six years, has been targeted three times this year alone.
Local veterans and residents have joined together to clean up the mess left by the vandals. Police described the actions as 'absolutely disgraceful', though the sentiment has been echoed more strongly by the community.
The memorial is a tribute to those who have served the country, and its destruction has sparked outrage, especially as Remembrance Day approaches. The Pinnocks have funded the display entirely themselves.
An online fundraising page via JustGiving has been set up to help raise money for the wood needed to rebuild the statues. The appeal aims to restore the memorial before the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies.
