US intelligence has warned that Russia is gearing up for an armed provocation on Polish territory to test NATO's resolve, dramatically escalating fears of a wider European conflict. Polish security sources told Polish news website Onet that Washington has issued multiple alerts about potential strikes on critical infrastructure using missiles and drones, or even a limited ground incursion by Russian or Belarusian forces.
Scenarios Under Discussion
Scenarios under discussion apparently include drone attacks on power stations or simulated air strikes that would trigger Polish air defences. The operation, which experts fear could occur within months, is designed to force Western allies to suspend military aid to Ukraine, according to officials close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who described it as a deliberate provocation.
More alarmingly, Polish intelligence has not ruled out a hybrid attack in the border region, possibly involving soldiers crossing from Russia's Kaliningrad exclave or from Belarus. Moscow could attempt to disguise such an incursion as an accidental breach due to GPS failure or a malfunctioning helicopter rescue mission.
NATO's Paper Tiger Test
The aim, sources said, would be to present NATO with a fait accompli: negotiate a withdrawal rather than respond militarily, using any resulting talks to demand an end to support for Ukraine. The aim would be to portray the alliance as a paper tiger without triggering full-scale war, given Russia's forces remain heavily committed in Ukraine.
Multiple sources, including a Polish defence ministry figure, an ambassador from a NATO ally, and a Baltic security official, confirmed the seriousness of the threat. One source close to the Polish president stated that the US systematically informs Poland about ever-new Russian plans for a conventional attack on NATO's eastern flank.
Fresh Russian Aggression
The warning comes amid fresh Russian aggression. Overnight strikes on Kyiv killed at least 18 people and injured scores more in an 11-hour barrage targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the barbaric assault, stating it showed Vladimir Putin's determination to inflict suffering while Ukraine seeks peace. Moscow claimed the attacks were retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on its oil refineries.
Poland's Vulnerability and NATO Readiness
Relations between Poland and Ukraine have been strained by disputes over history and agriculture, a rift Russia may seek to exploit. Poland, a key supporter of Kyiv, shares borders with both Belarus and Kaliningrad, making it vulnerable. NATO has signalled its readiness. Recent naval exercises in Latvia involving US forces were intended to deter Moscow, while German air force chief Holger Neumann has indicated Kaliningrad could be a target in any response. Poland has already held exercises to demonstrate a devastating alliance counter-strike.
Escalation Risks
Western officials stress that Russia lacks the capacity for sustained war against NATO but could still create dangerous escalation. Former prime minister Boris Johnson urged stronger action, criticising delays in seizing frozen Russian assets and questioning UK imports of Russian-derived aviation fuel. As a crucial NATO summit approaches in Ankara, the US warnings underscore the precarious balance on Europe's eastern flank. Any miscalculation risks transforming the Ukraine conflict into a direct East-West clash with catastrophic global potential.
