Huntley's Alleged Killer in Court Over Prison Murder

Anthony Russell, the prisoner accused of murdering Soham killer Ian Huntley, has appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via a prison video link. The charge of murder was not formally put to him during the hearing, which was presided over by Mr Justice Hilliard.

Court Appearance and Trial Date

Russell attended the hearing from prison, and the judge set several deadlines for pre-trial matters to be completed. A trial date had already been fixed for November 23 this year. Russell was further remanded in custody until his next appearance.

Details of the Alleged Attack

Russell, 43, is alleged to have attacked Huntley with a metal bar in a workshop at HMP Frankland in County Durham on February 26. Following the alleged assault, Huntley was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he later died.
