The US House of Representatives on Wednesday backed a Democratic-led resolution aimed at stopping the Iran war until it is authorized by Congress. The House voted 215 to 208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in favor of the war powers resolution. This marked the latest setback for President Donald Trump in Congress, despite his party holding slim majorities in both chambers.
Growing Bipartisan Concern
The move reflects increasing congressional concern, even among Trump's fellow Republicans, over the conflict with Iran. However, the vote is largely symbolic. Any resolution would also need to pass the Senate to become effective and would require two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override an almost certain Trump veto.
Previous Attempts
Nevertheless, this vote comes after three previous war powers resolutions had failed in the House by increasingly narrow margins. The Senate advanced a separate but similar resolution last month in a procedural vote, following seven earlier unsuccessful attempts.
