The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced that one of its snipers claimed a new world record by killing a Russian soldier at a distance of 3.8km (2.3 miles). The shot surpasses the previous record of 3.54km set by a Canadian sniper in Iraq in 2017.
The SBU press office stated: 'The SBU sniper set a world record for a successful shot. SBU snipers are changing the rules of world sniping, demonstrating the ability to work effectively at fantastic distances.' Ukrainian media shared footage apparently showing the strike, though it has not been independently verified.
The shot was reportedly made using a domestically produced rifle nicknamed 'the Lord of the Horizon'. This follows a near-record shot of 2.74km (1.7 miles) made by a Ukrainian sniper about a year ago, thought to be the second-longest combat kill at the time.
The previous record holder was a Canadian special forces sniper; before that, British sniper Craig Harrison held the title with a 2.48km (1.54-mile) kill in Afghanistan in 2009.
Separately, Ukrainian special forces have been using high-speed jet-skis for attacks in Crimea, and new UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron visited Kyiv for a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
