UK war register would recruit middle-class first, historian warns

A leading historian and author has warned that any UK war register would likely focus on recruiting middle-class volunteers if World War 3 were to break out. The warning comes amid escalating tensions with Iran and fears that US President Donald Trump could order a nuclear strike.

Historian's warning on war register recruitment

Author and historian David Swift said that a war register, a database of citizens who volunteer to support the nation during a military attack, would probably draw largely from more middle-class people. He compared it to those who offered refuge to Ukrainians.

Swift told us: "If there was something explicit and obvious, like ground troops or airstrikes against a NATO country, then we would see a serious response and new sense of urgency from the British government, and something like the war register, which I think a lot of people would sign up for."

Liberal Democrat proposal and conscription concerns

The war register idea was reportedly suggested by Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, the third-largest party in the House of Commons. The proposal would create a pre-arranged list of citizens who have officially signalled their readiness to help during a military attack.

Swift added: "I think it could be a useful way of mobilising people for non-military tasks, although presumably it would largely recruit from more middle-class people, as with those offering refuge to Ukrainians, etc. In fact, it's no coincidence the Lib Dems are pushing this."

Potential exemptions and conscription scenarios

Should a war register fall short and the UK opt to reintroduce conscription, which was scrapped in 1963, Swift suggested that workers in certain sectors could find themselves exempt, while others might be more squarely in the firing line.

Swift said: "Since there is such an urgent need to rebuild Britain's defence industries and industrial capacity, I would expect that people in these important occupations would be exempt. Or even that people could be 'conscripted' into working in these industries. Military conscription would target unemployed graduates - this would be very popular with lots of people."

The warnings come as Iran rebuffed a request from US Vice President JD Vance for peace negotiations, and Senator Chris Murphy alleged that catastrophic war plans have been disclosed. Former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson has claimed that Trump might contemplate a nuclear strike on Iran, which could plunge the world into World War 3, with a decision potentially reached by this weekend.
