UK to Train Second Wave of Ukrainian Troops in Major Defence Boost Against Russia
UK to train second wave of Ukrainian troops

In a significant escalation of the United Kingdom's military support, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has confirmed the launch of a second major training programme for Ukrainian armed forces recruits.

The new initiative will see another cohort of Ukrainian soldiers undergo rigorous combat training on British soil, following the resounding success of Operation Interflex. This ongoing operation has already equipped more than 30,000 Ukrainians with vital frontline skills since the full-scale Russian invasion began.

Mr Shapps made the announcement during a high-profile visit to Lydd Army Camp in Kent, where he observed first-hand the intensive training being delivered to current recruits. He witnessed a live-fire exercise and spoke with both the Ukrainian trainees and the British military instructors guiding them.

"The UK's training offer is second to none," the Defence Secretary stated. "We are providing these brave individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to defend their homeland and fight back against Russian aggression. Our commitment to Ukraine remains iron-clad."

Building on a Proven Foundation

Operation Interflex, a multinational endeavour led by the UK, has become a cornerstone of international support for Ukraine. The programme focuses on:

  • Weapons handling and marksmanship
  • Frontline medical care and casualty evacuation
  • Patrolling and trench warfare techniques
  • Cyber defence and resilience training

The training, which spans several weeks, is designed to transform civilians and volunteers into effective, disciplined soldiers ready for the realities of modern combat.

A Unified International Effort

While the UK leads the operation, it is a truly collaborative effort. Military personnel from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, and other international partners are embedded within the training teams, bringing a wealth of experience and fostering strong military alliances.

This new phase of training underscores Britain's leading role in the global response to the conflict and its long-term commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty and security.
