Two US service members are missing in south-western Morocco after taking part in annual multinational military exercises, the United States Africa Command (Africom) has said.
A search and rescue operation involving the US, Morocco and other countries participating in the African Lion exercise has been launched, Africom said in a statement on Sunday.
The incident occurred on 2 May near the Cap Draa training area close to Tan Tan, a city on the Atlantic coast. The war games began in April and are scheduled to end in early May, spanning four countries including Tunisia, Ghana and Senegal.
The Moroccan army reported that the service members went missing near a cliff. A US defence official said initial reports indicated the two soldiers may have fallen into the ocean, adding that the incident was not related to terrorism.
African Lion, which has been running since 2004, is the largest annual joint military exercise by the US on the continent, aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation and readiness for global crises.
