Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te was rushed to a secret command post in an armoured car as part of the annual Han Kuang military exercises, which run from August 5 to 15.

The president sped off in the armoured vehicle in the middle of the night, practising his escape route amid fears of a possible Chinese invasion. The operation is part of the island's ramped-up military preparedness.

The drill comes after 14 Chinese aircraft and nine warships circled Taiwan on Wednesday, according to authorities. This show of force underscores the heightened tensions in the region.
