Sir Keir Starmer has unveiled defence spending plans that critics say leave Britain dangerously exposed to aggression from Vladimir Putin's Russia. The Prime Minister announced cuts to key military assets, including Skynet-6 satellites, R-1 Shadow spy planes, Wildcat helicopters, and Storm Shadow missiles, while delaying £9 billion in urgent military housing repairs.
Starmer's Defence Plan Falls Short
Starmer claimed the plan represents the "biggest sustained increase since the Cold War," but analysis shows that £4 billion of the £5 billion allocated for drones was previously announced and is now double-counted. The Prime Minister stated Britain would spend 2.7% of GDP on defence, but actual spending on fighting forces is less than 2.3%, well below the NATO target of 3.5%.
According to Harvey Jones, writing for Express.co.uk, "You can't spin your way to victory in a shooting war. Starmer is playing political games with our nation's defence."
Readiness by 2030 Called Into Question
Starmer boasted that Britain would be ready to fight Russia by 2030 if necessary. Critics point out that the war in Ukraine began in 2022, and announcing a four-year delay in readiness effectively invites attack now. "Starmer just let slip a spine-chilling secret - our nation is defenceless. Basically, he's invited Putin to attack us. NOW. Before we are ready," Jones wrote.
The plan also slashes hundreds of millions from missile defences, leaving Britain vulnerable to potential strikes. Military housing repairs worth £9 billion are delayed, forcing service families to live in unhealthy, mouldy conditions.
Leadership Concerns
Starmer's background as a human rights lawyer has raised questions about his suitability as a war leader. Critics argue that his procedural, paperwork-driven approach is ill-suited to the rapid decisions required in conflict. "Imagine fighting a war on Starmer's watch. While missiles battered defenceless British cities, he'd be in his bunker, hunched over some obscure international legal document," Jones added.
The Prime Minister's announcement has sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for his removal before further damage is done to national security.
