A Russian missile barrage has struck central Kyiv, causing significant damage to the historic building housing the British Council's offices. The brazen daylight attack is being interpreted by British officials as a deliberate strike on a institution symbolising UK-Ukraine ties.
The assault, which occurred on Monday morning, was part of a major aerial offensive against the Ukrainian capital, one of the largest in recent weeks. Ukrainian air defences were scrambled, successfully intercepting all incoming missiles, but falling debris rained down on several central districts.
'A Deliberate Strike on UK Interests'
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy was quick to respond, stating the attack "risks further deteriorating what is already a deeply damaged relationship between our two countries." He confirmed the British Council's office, which had been operational until the full-scale invasion in 2022, was hit.
While the British Council is primarily a cultural and educational organisation, promoting the English language and UK culture abroad, its targeting sends a stark message. This suggests the Kremlin's campaign now explicitly encompasses non-military, soft-power entities associated with supporting Ukraine.
Fallout and Falling Debris
The aftermath saw emergency services battling a large fire at the damaged site. Thankfully, no British Council staff were present at the time, as they had been relocated or were working remotely since the war began. Casualty reports from the wider attack are still being assessed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his call for enhanced air defence systems from Western allies, emphasising that "every day, Russian terror proves that Ukraine needs sufficient air defence."
