Four people were killed and another 10 injured in Russian overnight attacks on Ukraine, just one day after Moscow launched its deadliest strike on Kyiv this year. In the Sumy region, two women, an elderly man and a girl under two died when a Russian drone hit a house, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the regional military administration. Several others were injured in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown.
Kyiv observed a day of mourning on Friday after at least 36 people were killed there on Thursday. The attack left 91 injured and destroyed more than 130 buildings. Zelensky said his forces would 'definitely' retaliate. Moscow claimed the attacks were retaliation for Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Zelensky blamed the destruction partly on allies failing to deliver promised air defences.
The EU imposed sanctions on six people, mostly scientists, involved in developing the toxin that killed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. The EU said they were linked to chemical weapons development, particularly epibatidine, found in samples from Navalny's body. Russia demanded European countries provide concrete data to support their allegations. Those sanctioned face an asset freeze and travel ban to the EU.
Ukraine is seeking to lower tensions with Poland, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, after talks over a dispute about World War Two-era massacres. The Kremlin suggested the EU should consider Ukraine's alleged involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline blasts when deciding on EU membership. German prosecutors charged a former Ukrainian army officer in connection with the blasts, but Kyiv said it lacked information to respond in detail.
Russia claimed its troops captured the village of Oleksandrivka in Dnipropetrovsk region, though the report could not be independently verified. Ukraine hit two Russian airfields in occupied Crimea, targeting at least seven jets and drone warehouses, Ukraine's SBU security service said. The US warned Warsaw that Russia is planning an armed 'provocation' against Poland to test Nato's resolve, according to reports. The assault could target Poland's vital infrastructure with missiles or drones, or involve Russian soldiers crossing into Nato territory, Washington said.
