In 1980, two US airmen reported an extraordinary encounter near a military base in Suffolk, England. The incident, known as the Rendlesham Forest UFO case, has resurfaced amid claims of binary code messages left by the craft.
Nick Pope, a former Ministry of Defence employee who worked on the 'UFO desk' from 1991 to 1994, described the case as 'the perfect storm of a UFO case'. He cited multiple military witnesses, radar evidence, radioactivity, ground traces, and declassified documents as supporting the sightings over three consecutive nights.
The events began on Christmas night 1980 when airman John Burroughs noticed strange blinking red and blue lights from the forest near RAF Bentwaters, a US-operated base. Along with supervisor SSgt Bud Steffens, he investigated and saw a white light join the others. They called for backup, and staff sergeant Jim Penniston arrived.
Penniston later claimed to have touched the craft and received a binary code message, which has recently been decoded by researchers. The code reportedly contains coordinates and a message about human exploration. Pope co-wrote a book with Penniston and Burroughs, 'Encounter in Rendlesham Forest', published in 2014.
Pope, who was initially a sceptic, said the evidence convinced him that some UFOs may be extraterrestrial in origin. He noted that 5% to 10% of sightings defy conventional explanation after rigorous investigation.
