RAF Typhoon jets are set to deploy to Poland within days as part of Nato's new Eastern Sentry mission, ready to shoot down drones over Poland and other eastern European allies if necessary. The announcement follows last week's incursion of 19 uncrewed Russian aircraft into Polish airspace.
Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that the Typhoons, based at Coningsby in Lincolnshire, will join French, German and Danish counterparts in reinforcing Dutch F-35s and Polish F-16s. Healey stated that Nato is 'responding with unity and strength' to Russian threats and that the Typhoons would take action against drones putting Polish lives at risk.
Speaking during a visit to Swindon, where drone manufacturer Tekever plans to build a factory, Healey emphasised that the mission could extend to Romania if deemed necessary. Over the weekend, Romania became the second Nato ally in eastern Europe to detect a Russian drone crossing its airspace in a week.
Last Wednesday, 19 unarmed Russian drones crossed into Poland during a broader attack on Ukraine, prompting Nato to scramble jets and activate Patriot air defence systems. Only three or four drones were shot down, raising concerns about air defence effectiveness. In response, Nato's military commander called for more fighter jets for air policing.
On Friday, Nato leaders announced Operation Eastern Sentry to better protect the skies over eastern Europe, starting with Poland. The US has not announced additional commitments, consistent with statements that European members should take the lead on continental defence. Healey noted that the Typhoons will be supported by a Voyager refuelling aircraft and 400 military personnel in the UK.
Healey declined to confirm whether the Russian drone incursion was deliberate, calling it 'reckless' and 'dangerous' regardless. The Typhoons are expected to be operational within days, with a flight time of about 90 minutes from Lincolnshire to Poland.
