A prominent Russian political figure has warned that Moscow is prepared to launch nuclear strikes against the United Kingdom and other European nations. Sergei Karaganov, head of the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy and known as Professor Doomsday, said Russia should increase its nuclear arsenal and be ready to use preemptive attacks to 'destroy' what he called 'evil' Western states.
In an interview, Karaganov accused Western leaders of being 'reckless' and 'feeble-minded', and claimed that Russia's nuclear deterrence must be strengthened to prevent a full-scale war. He suggested that in a worst-case scenario, Russia would stage a series of preemptive strikes against European capitals, followed by a massive nuclear retaliation if those capitals responded.
Karaganov, who boasts of having a 'loud voice' in President Vladimir Putin's Russia, also argued that Western elites need to be 'seriously frightened' and, if not, 'destroyed'. His comments come as world leaders gather at the Munich Security Conference to discuss peace in Ukraine, where the war is now in its fifth year.
Meanwhile, Russia continued its military operations in Ukraine, launching drone attacks on the port city of Odesa, killing one person and wounding six. In the Zaporizhzhia region, 559 separate strikes hit residential areas, resulting in one death. A Ukrainian drone was downed in Volgograd, Russia, injuring three people, including a child.
