According to a transcript released by the Kremlin, Putin acknowledged the unique dangers faced by the Russian Navy. He noted that the sea is inherently risky, but military sailors face 'double or triple' that peril. Calling the sailors a 'special family' and a 'special caste in the best sense of the word,' he added, 'So from the bottom of my heart, I once again offer my greetings to you on Navy Day.' He went on to say that a distinct culture has developed within naval circles, evolving since the time of Peter the Great, and that service in the Navy calls for a very particular set of skills and knowledge.
Orchestrated Displays of Maritime Strength
The ceremonial displays in St Petersburg were heavily orchestrated to project maritime strength and national pride. Putin reviewed an honour guard of young sailors gripping their rifles and walked past troops carrying the Russian tricolour and the St Andrew's flag of the Russian Navy. A military band in ceremonial white and gold uniforms provided the musical backdrop. Remarks on 'Mosquito Fleet' and New Technology
Putin also discussed Russia's naval 'mosquito fleet,' stating that such fleets have always existed and the only new thing is technology. He noted that small-tonnage vessels equipped with modern weapons, such as Kalibr cruise missiles, can be launched from even smaller boats. He mentioned the Poseidon unmanned submersible, saying it is in its final development phase and close to becoming operational. 'We have the technology but it needs to be improved and adjusted to specific water regions and specific combat situations,' he said.
Family Conversation with Officers
Following the formal awards ceremony and military pageantry, Putin invited the officers to sit down for what he termed a 'family conversation,' cementing the day's dual themes of martial prowess and brotherly solidarity.
