Philippine security forces have been placed on high alert following a bomb explosion at a Catholic mass in a university gymnasium in Marawi, southern Philippines, which killed four people and wounded dozens. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr condemned the attack as “senseless and most heinous acts perpetrated by foreign terrorists”.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the blast, which occurred at Mindanao State University. The attack comes after the killing of 11 militants in a military operation on Friday in Maguindanao del Sur, 200km away, raising suspicions of revenge by pro-Islamic State groups.
Regional military commander Maj Gen Gabriel Viray III confirmed at least four deaths, including three women, and 50 injuries, with two victims in critical condition. The explosion caused panic among worshippers, leaving victims bloodied on the floor. Security checkpoints have been set up around the city, and troops are investigating.
President Marcos urged calm, stating on social media that he had instructed the police and armed forces to ensure civilian safety. “Rest assured we will bring the perpetrators of this ruthless act to justice,” he said. The university has suspended classes until further notice.
