The House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution by a vote of 214-208, aiming to restrict the Trump administration's military actions in Iran. The vote took place ahead of the chamber's August recess.
Four Republicans—Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, Tom Barrett, and Thomas Massie—joined all Democrats in supporting the measure. This marks the first vote on such a resolution since the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Iran collapsed earlier this month.
Background and Previous Actions
Both chambers of Congress passed war powers resolutions in June, but the White House largely ignored them. This week, Pete Hegseth stated that Donald Trump had full authority to continue the conflict with Iran, while also requesting supplemental funding for the war from Congress.
Representative Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said: “Let me be clear: This body has already spoken. The War Powers Resolution passed with bipartisan support in the House and the Senate. The Trump administration was required to end its hostilities against Iran. It has not.”
Senate Vote Expected
The Senate is also preparing to hold a vote on its own war powers resolution today.
