Turkey violated Greek airspace 17 times in a single day, prompting Greece to scramble fighter jets to intercept the intruders, military officials confirmed. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 6, and included a mock dogfight between a Greek and a Turkish pilot.
Escalation in the Aegean
The aerial confrontation peaked when a Greek fighter jet engaged in a simulated dogfight with a Turkish pilot, the eighth such clash this year and the first since July 10. The Turkish aircraft involved included US-made, armed F-16 fighter jets, an ATR-72 turboprop spy plane, and multiple unmanned military drones.
Military sources confirmed that one of the armed F-16s engaged directly with a Greek jet dispatched to force it back, resulting in a dangerous mock dogfight over the water, according to ekathimerini.
Energy project adds fuel
The high-altitude aggression comes just 24 hours after Greece announced it is pressing ahead with a plan to lay a deep-sea electrical cable connecting the Greek and Cypriot power grids. Turkey has vehemently opposed the undersea link, claiming it encroaches on its maritime territory.
Despite both being NATO members, Greece and Turkey have been locked in a bitter, decades-long dispute over maritime boundaries, airspace rights, and continental shelf sovereignty in the Aegean Sea, further exacerbated by the division of Cyprus. These historical rivalries frequently flare up over competing claims to energy reserves and territorial waters, keeping the region in a constant state of high alert.
