A couple renovating their home in Torteval, Guernsey, have discovered a World War II Nazi bunker beneath their property. Shaun Tullier, 35, and his wife Caroline, 32, moved into the house in October 2021 and began digging up their front garden to create a turning point.
After the previous owner contacted Shaun about a wartime building under the house, the couple dug up 100 tonnes of ground to reveal the bunker entrance. The bunker comprises two main rooms measuring 17ft by 10ft and 17ft by 20ft, plus a 30ft by 4ft hallway, located 26ft below ground level.
Inside, they found German writing on the walls, including the phrase 'achtung feind hort mit' (beware, the enemy is listening), along with old bottles, rubble, water, a tiled floor, and an escape hatch. Shaun described the discovery as 'completely wild' and a part of history.
The couple is converting the bunker into a games room with a snooker table and gym, while preserving the German writing. Shaun hopes to host a Halloween party there this year. The German occupation of the Channel Islands lasted from 1940 to 1945.
