Alan Robert Williams, a 35-year-old father from Wirral, Merseyside, has been killed by a Russian drone during his first combat mission in Ukraine, despite having no military experience. His wife Stephanie, 40, has spoken of her anguish after learning he was declared missing in action, with his body unrecovered.
Williams, who shared a 12-year-old daughter with Stephanie, died in the Kharkiv region on July 14 while attempting to rescue foreign officers. According to his unit, four drones attacked the squad, and a mortar dropped eight metres away, leaving Williams unresponsive. His comrades were forced to flee under fire.
Stephanie revealed that Williams had lost his job as a school site manager earlier this year and had struggled with mental health issues, including a suicide attempt. Despite her pleas, he volunteered to fight in Ukraine, signing a contract on June 10. She said, 'He had no frontline military experience at all.'
Williams left for Ukraine on May 7 and underwent training, with his spirits reportedly improving. However, Stephanie's concerns grew, and their last conversation on July 2 hinted at a dangerous mission. She said, 'I noticed the difference in his tone and behaviour.'
A Ukrainian sergeant contacted Stephanie on July 15 to say contact had been lost and evidence indicated he was killed in action. A comrade later confirmed his death on July 30, but Stephanie remains in limbo, unable to mourn properly until he is officially declared killed in action.
