West Ham United's Premier League survival is no longer in their own hands after a 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. The Hammers could have moved five points clear of the relegation zone with a victory, but instead find themselves in danger of dropping into the bottom three if Tottenham beat Aston Villa on Sunday.
Brentford, who had not won in six matches, took the lead after 15 minutes when a cross from Keane Lewis-Potter was turned into his own net by West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Bees doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half through a penalty from Igor Thiago, after Dango Ouattara was tripped by El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Mikkel Damsgaard sealed the win with a low strike eight minutes from time, capping a superb performance for the hosts. West Ham had their chances, with Mavropanos having an equaliser ruled out for offside and Taty Castellanos hitting the post twice, while Crysencio Summerville struck the crossbar.
The defeat leaves West Ham in a precarious position, relying on other results to avoid dropping into the relegation places. Brentford, meanwhile, move back into contention for European qualification for the first time in their history.
