A public consultation on proposals to reintroduce two-way traffic to Sturrock Street in Kilmarnock town centre is underway, with feedback accepted until August 6. The plans also aim to improve walking, wheeling and cycling routes.
Background and Partners
Ayrshire Roads Alliance has launched the consultation in partnership with East Ayrshire Council, Ayrshire 360 and engineering consultancy Sweco. The project is part of a wider programme to create a town centre with stronger active travel links and a more attractive environment.
Key Proposals
Changes to the one-way road system affecting Sturrock Street, Green Street and High Street are proposed, including reopening Sturrock Street to two-way traffic. The consultation states the project aims to develop Kilmarnock into “a town with strong walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure that will provide an attractive and inspirational environment in which people want to live, work, learn and play, and in which communities thrive and businesses want to invest.”
How to Participate
Residents, businesses and visitors can review concept designs on an interactive website and complete an online survey. The survey, administered by Sweco on behalf of Ayrshire Roads Alliance, closes at 11.59pm on Thursday, August 6. Feedback will help shape the next stage of the project.
Context
East Ayrshire Council previously agreed to explore returning Sturrock Street to two-way traffic as part of wider regeneration plans. Councillors also approved further work to route the proposed Infinity Loop active travel network along the street. The consultation forms part of ongoing efforts to improve connections across Kilmarnock town centre by encouraging walking, wheeling and cycling while reviewing traffic movement on the eastern edge.
