Devon Zoo Closes After 17 Years, Leaving Community 'Devastated'
Devon Zoo Closes After 17 Years

A family-friendly zoo in Devon has been forced to shut down, leaving locals "devastated" after it served as a cherished part of the community for more than 17 years.

The much-loved attraction was home to countless animals, from meerkats to zebras, flamingos and wild cats, all now relocated across the country. While the relocation process was carried out as "safely and responsibly" as possible, the park said in a statement, locals were heartbroken to see them go.

Axe Valley Wildlife Park: A Beloved Destination

Axe Valley Wildlife Park, located near Axminster in Devon, was a popular destination for a family day out in the area and an exciting place where children could interact with and discover animals from around the globe. As well as visiting the zoo, the attraction also gave visitors the opportunity to enjoy some one-to-one time with their favourite animals. Youngsters aged seven and above could even become zookeepers for the day. Yet, it proved insufficient to sustain the park's future.

Financial Struggles Lead to Closure

After battling to keep the business running, the park, which originally welcomed visitors in 2008, and following 17 "unforgettable" years, announced its closure in October 2025. Their reasoning was attributed to the park being "financially unviable for us to continue operating". Their statement read: "It is with a heavy heart that we share some sad news. Our much-loved Family Zoo will be closing on Friday, 10th October 2025. As many of you may have heard in the news, we are not the only business facing these difficult times. Unfortunately, it has become financially unviable for us to continue operating."

"When we opened our gates 17 years ago, we could never have imagined the wonderful journey ahead, the thousands of amazing visitors, school trips, and loyal members who became part of our zoo family. We are so proud of the wide variety of animals we've cared for over the years, each one holding a special place in our hearts (we know many of you have your favourites too!)."

Tribute to Staff and Community Reaction

The statement also paid tribute to the "love, dedication, and passion" shown by staff towards the animals, as well as the warm and welcoming manner in which they greeted visitors. Locals and regular visitors swiftly descended on the Facebook post announcing the closure, flooding the comments section with their dismay, while others took the opportunity to reminisce about cherished memories.

One user wrote: "Well that sucks. That's me re-evaluating any trips to Axminster then. You guys were absolutely amazing. Truly gutted to hear this. This is absolutely the sort of place that local councils/any local funding groups should be looking to give a cash injection to because you guys are such an amazing part of the local community and well worth saving."

One visitor said: "Such a heartbreaking decision for you to have had to make. The park's closure will be a huge loss to the community. Like many, I've thoroughly enjoyed my visits over the last 17 years. Thank you for the memories." Numerous people have said the Wildlife Park was their only reason for visiting the area in the first place, with many claiming they now have little reason to return to Axminster following its closure.

Future of the Site Uncertain

What will become of the land where the animals once roamed remains unclear, but local residents will undoubtedly be keeping a watchful eye on developments, hoping it brings something equally cherished to their community.
