A black and white chequered road sign, reminiscent of a Formula One finish line, has been causing confusion among motorists across the UK. Drivers have taken to social media to express their bewilderment, with many saying they have 'no idea what it means'.
The sign, which measures approximately 10ft by 10ft, has been spotted at various locations including the B3084 as it crosses the A30 between Salisbury and Winchester, the B4455 near Stratford-upon-Avon, and the B4027 just outside Oxford. It does not appear in the official Highway Code or the government's Know Your Traffic Signs guide.
Despite the confusion, social media users have suggested that the sign is a long-range hazard warning, particularly useful at night. It is typically placed at junctions where drivers need to give way, often in locations with a history of accidents. One user explained: 'It's for night driving. When driving down that road it illuminates to basically say 'Hey, slow down, the road ends'.'
Another added: 'It's placed on the opposite side of a minor arm at crossroads to alert drivers that they need to give way. Sometimes they're positioned to screen the road ahead so drivers on the minor arm don't carry straight through the junction.'
