Pep Guardiola's status as one of the Premier League's greatest-ever managers could be impacted after Manchester City were reportedly found guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules and regulations.
On Friday afternoon, after a three-year saga, the club is said to have received a guilty verdict for all but one of the 115 charges they were slapped with in 2023. It is alleged that the club broke the rules over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.
Guardiola's achievements under scrutiny
With Guardiola taking the reins in 2016, his achievements with the club over the past decade have also been coloured with controversy. Without the Spanish mastermind at the helm, that haul of six Premier Leagues, 11 domestic cups and the 2023 Champions League crown may well have gone elsewhere.
On the flipside, Guardiola had a wealth of world-class talent to pick and choose from on the pitch, which allowed him to orchestrate greatness in Greater Manchester. Some of those players may have only been able to play a part in the Manchester City story as a result of those financial breaches.

Aaron Morris, a lifelong Sunderland supporter, said it seems ironic that one of the main rules that has served as protection to Manchester City over the past 15 years or so has also been the catalyst of their downfall. He watched teams struggle to survive their first season in the English top flight after achieving promotion from the Championship as a result of financial limitation, while the so-called 'Big Six' continue to grow without issue.
Morris noted that Guardiola has seen success with every club he has been a part of, but questioned whether he has really seen the same struggles as the likes of Mikel Arteta, Jurgen Klopp or Jose Mourinho. In his opinion, an unfairly juiced squad takes the shine away from City's achievements, and in tandem, Guardiola's legacy at the club is also scuffed.
Mixed views on legacy impact
Kieran Horn said we can only take Guardiola at his word that he had no knowledge of City's financial wrongdoings. Even if that is the case, his legacy at the club can't not be impacted by the fact City have essentially cheated and won countless trophies during his reign. He added that it is clear Guardiola is an excellent coach and does not need an unfair advantage to win, but it will be difficult to look at him in the same light.
Mark Wakefield said that whether Guardiola likes it or not, his legacy will almost certainly be impacted. Whatever punishments are handed to City, when people look back on some of the achievements from Guardiola's tenure, it's guaranteed to have an asterisk next to it. If City are unsuccessful with a potential appeal, there is no doubt that Guardiola's legacy will be affected.
Bruna Reis said it would not erase Guardiola's achievements, but it would undoubtedly change how they are perceived. Critics would inevitably wonder whether City's trophies, records and sustained dominance came on a completely level playing field. For her, it would not take Guardiola out of the debate as one of the greatest managers of all time, but it could make it more difficult to place him unequivocally above figures such as Sir Alex Ferguson.
