A mother has described her holiday as 'ruined' after she was stung more than 100 times by a swarm of wasps at a Haven Caravan Park in Skegness. Alison Riley, 34, was on a break with her husband Adam and their two sons when the attack occurred on July 29.
Alison, a primary school teacher from Leeds, left her family to fetch a hairband from their caravan when she was suddenly engulfed by hundreds of wasps. She recalled screaming and running around the park, but the insects continued to sting her relentlessly for about 15 minutes.
Other holidaymakers came to her aid, using a fire hose to spray her and towels to swat the wasps away. In desperation, Alison removed her top, saying 'all dignity went out of the window'. Paramedics arrived 30 minutes after the attack and a nurse stopped counting the stings after 100.
Pest control later discovered a nest containing 'a few thousand' wasps, explaining that the swarm likely occurred because Alison ventured too close. She said she never spotted the nest. Alison is now recovering with antihistamines, steroid tablets, creams, and codeine, but remains extremely itchy and terrified of going outside.
A Haven spokesperson said: 'As soon as we were made aware of the wasp nest, the area was immediately cordoned off, and our pest control team quickly resolved the issue. We are very sorry that Ms. Riley had this experience at our park and wish her a swift recovery.'
