Acclaimed actress Miriam Margolyes has revealed her intention to spend her final years overseas. The 84-year-old, known for a celebrated career in stage and screen, discussed her plans with Romesh Ranganathan, citing Brexit as a key factor complicating her ability to reside in her Italian home.
Margolyes explained that Brexit has affected her life because she cannot live in the house she bought in Italy, the first home she ever purchased and where she and her partner Heather Sutherland wanted to end their lives together. She now considers acquiring Dutch or Italian nationality, noting she is already Australian as well as English.
The actress also spoke about her declining health, admitting she feels 'death is close'. She revealed a desire to reunite with musician David Essex, with whom she collaborated in the West End. Margolyes directly addressed him, saying she is nearly 85 and does not want to die before seeing him again.
Margolyes has previously opened up about health struggles, including a shoulder injury from a play 40 years ago that leaves her unable to put on a bra without assistance. She also candidly discussed a weakened pelvic floor, stating she 'pees herself all the time' and carries spare underwear.
