London to Be Investigated in Grooming Gangs Inquiry After Express Probe
London Probed in Grooming Gangs Inquiry After Express Probe

London will be one of the first locations investigated in the statutory independent inquiry into grooming gangs, following a major investigation by the Daily Express. The announcement comes amid accusations that London Mayor Sadiq Khan has turned a blind eye to the epidemic in the capital.

Mayor Accused of Ignoring Crisis

A victim who was repeatedly trafficked into London accused Mr Khan of 'living under a rock' and wilfully ignoring the problem. The Statutory Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs has confirmed that London, along with Oldham and Bradford and Keighley, will be the first areas to face local investigations.

Inquiry officials stated: 'London presents a different context because of its scale and complexity, with multiple boroughs and overlapping local, regional and national systems.'

Scope of the Investigation

The inquiry will examine how group-based child sexual exploitation and abuse by grooming gangs has been identified and responded to in London, including the capital's links with surrounding or connected areas. It will also take account of relevant work already underway, including by the London Assembly.

The Daily Express has published a series of investigations into the grooming gangs scandal, prompting the inquiry to prioritise these areas.
