Piers Morgan stormed off the set of ITV's Good Morning Britain on Tuesday after a heated exchange with co-presenter Alex Beresford over his continued criticism of the Duchess of Sussex. The incident occurred during a discussion about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in the UK on Monday night.
Beresford called Morgan's behaviour 'pathetic' and 'diabolical' as he walked off live on air, prompting host Susanna Reid to send the show to an early break. Beresford told Morgan: 'I understand that you don't like Meghan Markle, you've made it so clear a number of times on this programme, and I understand you've got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off. She's entitled to cut you off if she wants to ... yet you continue to trash her.'
Morgan, 55, responded by saying: 'OK, I'm done with this, sorry, no, can't do this,' before leaving the studio. He later returned, and the discussion resumed. The row came after Morgan had previously cast doubt on Meghan's disclosure that she had suicidal thoughts while pregnant, drawing criticism from mental health charity Mind.
ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall confirmed that a senior executive had spoken to Morgan about his comments. She said the broadcaster had many voices and was committed to supporting mental health, but could not control what Morgan said on Twitter. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's interview has put pressure on Buckingham Palace to respond to allegations of racism within the royal family.
