EU Must Cut Fossil Fuel Imports, Boost Clean Energy, Says Von Der Leyen
EU Must Cut Fossil Fuel Imports, Boost Clean Energy

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for the European Union to reduce its heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels and instead focus on expanding its clean energy supply. Speaking on Thursday, she emphasised that the bloc must learn from the ongoing energy crisis, which she described as the second such crisis in four years.

Energy Independence and Clean Energy

“Our overdependency on imported fossil fuels makes us vulnerable,” von der Leyen stated. “We must reduce our overdependency on imported fossil fuels and boost our home-grown, affordable, clean energy supply. From renewables to nuclear, in full respect of technology neutrality.” Her remarks underscore a strategic shift towards energy independence and sustainability, aiming to shield the EU from future price shocks and supply disruptions.

Middle East Conflict Concerns

Turning to international affairs, von der Leyen addressed the situation in the Middle East, expressing the EU’s desire for ceasefires in Iran and Lebanon to hold. She stressed the urgent need to “re-establish peace and stability through diplomatic means.” However, she warned that “the consequences of this conflict may echo for months or even years to come,” highlighting the potential long-term repercussions for regional and global stability.
