A Chinese train conductor has lost his right leg after heroically pushing a deaf woman out of the path of an oncoming train. Xu Qiankai, 29, was on duty in Chengdu on July 6 when he spotted the woman crossing the railway track as a train approached.
Xu pressed the emergency stop button and shouted and whistled to warn the woman, but she did not react as she was deaf. Realising the train would still hit her, he jumped off the train and pushed her backwards to safety. However, he could not move out of the way in time and his right leg was crushed.
Xu was taken to hospital where his leg had to be amputated. Speaking from his hospital bed, he said: 'I have no regrets losing a leg to save a life.' The woman later visited him in hospital and bowed as a sign of thanks and respect.
According to his father, Xu is a military veteran who transferred to work at Rongchang Station to be closer to his family. The incident has been widely praised in China, with many hailing Xu as a hero.
